Dr. Rüdiger Recknagel

Chief Environmental Officer Audi Group and Managing Director of the Audi Environmental Foundation

Since 2016, Dr. Rüdiger Recknagel has been the Chief Environmental Officer responsible for the main plant in Ingolstadt. Within the Volkswagen Group, Dr. Recknagel is responsible for all environmental topics regarding AUDI Group. Furthermore he is Managing Director of the Audi Environmental Foundation.

Dr. Rüdiger Recknagel graduated with a degree in process engineering from the University of Karlsruhe, and gained a doctorate at the Institute for Chemical Process Engineering in Karlsruhe, in the field of heterogeneous catalysis for a petrochemical process.

In 1994, he started at AUDI AG in Ingolstadt where he worked as a technician in the paint shop. After various management positions in technical development department, quality assurance and production he changed to the environmental department.

At the MQ! Innovation Summit 2019, Dr. Rüdiger Recknagel confirmed that AUDI AG is heading toward a more sustainable future with ambitious goals: “We will improve the whole lifecycle of a car starting from the supply chain to the end of usage and the recycling process. Our aim is to reduce CO₂ emissions by 30% over the vehicle lifecycle by 2025. For example, we established a strategy that we call “Mission Zero” in order to address the challenges in the field of production and make them trackable; by 2025 all our plants will be CO₂ neutral. We will reduce water consumption, waste, volatile organic compounds, and we will launch more biodiversity projects. Audi Brussels is already CO₂ neutral, and Audi Hungaria will become CO₂ neutral in 2020.”

But many customers still need to be convinced of sustainable mobility. Dr. Recknagel knows how this can succeed: “The first step is that people get in touch with new sustainable mobility concepts to make their own experiences.” Sustainability and premium mobility are compatible — all you need is the right approach. “In my eyes, premium mobility, in the long term, means to offer CO₂ neutral mobility as well as to work and act sustainable in the whole company. At Audi, we conduct our business responsibly, transparently and with integrity. We act in harmony with ecology and economy and with a clear long-term perspective.”
